Buck for NSBA Letter Comparing Parents to Domestic

Terrorists Stops With Biden’s Education Secretary

By Carole Hornsby Haynes     January 13, 2022

The trail of the letter from the National School Boards Association Board (NSBA) labeling protesting parents as ‘domestic terrorists’ ends at the top of the Biden administration with the White House, DOJ, and Department of Education. According to emails obtained by Parents Defending Education (PDE), Education Secretary Miguel Cardona allegedly solicited the letter from the National School Boards Association.

A late September letter from the NSBA asked the Biden administration to use statutes such as the USA PATRIOT Act to stop threats and violence directed toward school board members that could be a “form of domestic terrorism and hate crimes.” The parents referenced were deemed dangerous because they stood up to school boards over mask mandates, COVID-19 vaccine requirements, schools reopening, remote learning, transgender policies, and the teaching of Critical Race Theory.

A few days later, Attorney General Merrick Garland Attorney sent a memorandum directing the FBI to target parents who protest at school board meetings. Garland claimed there was a “disturbing spike in harassment, intimidation, and threats of violence against school administrators, board members, teachers, and staff.” He directed the FBI to work in each federal judicial district with U.S. attorneys and leaders to plot a strategy against parents.

After public outrage and backlash, the letter was deleted from the NSBA’s website and an apology issued.

A press release from PDE states that currently 28 states have distanced themselves from the NSBA’s letter and 19 states have taken further action. Twelve states (Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Wisconsin) have already revoked their membership, participation, or dues from the NSBA.

Nine Republican Congressmen from Texas wrote a letter to the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) calling for the chapter to resign from the national organization. The letter stated that NSBA’s letter “was clearly intended to intimidate parents into silence, threatening them for defending their values and children’s educational interest.”

TASB has refused to withdraw from the NSBA and defended their position. So the Texas Freedom Caucus sent an open letter to Texas independent school districts asking them sever ties with TASB.

After the new documents surfaced that tie Cardona to the NSBA letter, Education and Labor Committee Republican Leader Virginia Foxx (R-NC) issued the following statement:

“From the very beginning, the targeting of concerned parents has been nothing short of a witch hunt orchestrated by partisan demagogues in the White House, Department of Justice, and the Department of Education. Today’s news that Education Secretary Miguel Cardona solicited the letter from the National School Boards Association that labeled parents as ‘domestic terrorists’ confirms this as a fact. To put it simply, this administration is the purveyor of new-age McCarthyism."

Today Foxx led a letter signed by every Republican Committee Member demanding a hearing with U.S. Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona to answer for his role in supporting and encouraging efforts to label concerned parents as domestic terrorists. One member – Elise M. Stefanik – has called publicly for Cardona’s resignation.
