Cancel Public Education, Not Christopher Columbus

By Carole Hornsby Haynes, Ph.D. October 12, 2020

The attacks on our culture continue on this federal holiday that honors Christopher Columbus. Dozens of cities and states have stopped celebrating Columbus Day and some have even replaced it with Indigenous People's Day.

Using “systemic racism” as justification for their destruction of Southern Confederate statues, the Marxist Black Lives Matter next attacked Columbus followed by a broad sweep of other figures from American history including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Francis Scott Key, Kit Carson, black Union soldiers, abolitionists, and the Union Army commander, Ulysses S. Grant.

We can lay the blame for this on public education. American public schools long ago tossed out academics to become the seedbed for training Marxists and future Black Lives Matter radicals. Today’s government schools use communist style brainwashing techniques including Social and Emotional Learning to feed students a steady diet of Marxism, pro-Islam, radical environmentalism, radical feminism, critical theory, social justice, hyper racialism, LGBTQ+, and more.

Much of the negative viewpoint about America comes from Marxist Howard Zinn’s, A People's History of the United States. Zinn was an American historian, university professor, and playwright. Cold War historian Ronald Radosh, a former Party member, concluded on the basis of Zinn's 423-page FBI file that "Zinn was an active member of the Communist party (CPUSA)."

Published in 1980, Zinn’s book is widely used as the core history textbook for schools. Zinn’s Marxist views toward America and its people are now accepted as conventional wisdom.

It is Zinn who has written the false narrative about Columbus that millennials now accept as gospel. He portrays Columbus, not as a heroic explorer, but as a greedy European who enslaved and murdered indigenous peoples in the Americas. Zinn takes quotes from Columbus’ diary out of context, casting him in a highly negative light while other passages about his kindness toward the natives are not mentioned.

Zinn fails to mention that Columbus didn’t bring cruelty to peaceful, benign indigenous peoples. Indeed, there is a long history of their extreme cruelty to each other.

In her outstanding book, Debunking Howard Zinn, Mary Grabar uses primary sources to demonstrate the fake history written by Zinn. This book is a must read for Americans to better understand why our youth have turned so viciously against the nation that has given them a standard of living and freedom that most others in the world would crawl over broken glass to have.

Recently a Marxist coalition presented a letter to Carroll ISD and the citizens of Southlake, Texas, demanding that the ISD’s curriculum address “police brutality, fight ‘systemic racism,’ and uplift Black Americans.”

  • “Ensure colonizers must not be portrayed as heroes” but “oppressors….who subjugated, stole from, and systematically killed entire civilizations.” Christopher Columbus is identified as one of those oppressors. They demand that Columbus Day not be celebrated.

  • “Ensure Confederate leaders are not revered.” Teach that the Confederates’ desire to perpetuate slavery was the “most direct cause of the war.”

  • Educate students about the role of the Daughters of the Confederacy in their

    1) revision of history (these Marxists are upset because the Daughters insist on history being accurately reported instead of whitewashed) and

    2) their operation as the women’s auxiliary of the KKK (They were not. Their purpose was to establish monuments to their dead and to lay wreaths on the graves of Confederate soldiers.)

  • Analyze how race, gender, and class were interconnected in the Civil Rights Movement.

  • Analyze the Black Power Movement and Malcolm X’s influence as well as some of its leaders such as Marxist Weather Underground terrorist Angela Davis and Black Panther Stokely Carmichael.

With this daily fare of mental conditioning in our public schools, it’s no surprise that students are joining the Marxist Black Lives Matter Movement.

Our public schools are so infiltrated by Marxism that it’s absolutely impossible to change them. Since the Wuhan Virus shutdown of schools, parents have been able to see firsthand just what their children are learning and they are not happy. The rate of parents planning to homeschool has doubled and will most likely continue to increase.

Are we seeing the collapse of public education? One can hope.
