Tea Party Style: A 2nd American Revolution?

By Dr. Carole Hornsby Haynes   |  November 5, 2010   Texas Insider

With the midterm general election behind us, it appears that we are indeed engaged in a Second American Revolution….this time at the ballot box. The harsh reality of how far we have strayed from our Judeo-Christian roots and our Constitutional principles finally have sunken in and shaken us to the very core of our souls.

In recent months many Americans have inwardly, and sometimes in hushed tones to trusted family members and friends, wondered whether we were facing another violent revolution to regain our unalienable rights from an abusive government and elitist demagogues.

In these “times that try men’s souls,” the philosophical warning by Thomas Jefferson has never been more relevant than it is now, “….God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion…what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms.”

For decades we have been lulled into euphoria in our land of plenty, ignoring the blatant signs that our constitutional republic form of government was being transformed with our own consent as we elected liberal bureaucrats to permanent positions in Washington.

Now the sleeping giant has been awakened and the American people indeed are preserving their spirit of resistance and taking up arms as they hit the streets carrying large homemade signs as their weapons, marching in Tea Party protests, and campaigning door-to-door for conservative candidates.

People who have never been involved in politics now are taking their civic duties seriously.

Small pocket copies of the Constitution are seen everywhere as people study the founding principles of a government so unique that it led to the rise of the greatest nation on earth with people from foreign lands flocking to its shores.

Even children were engaged in this midterm general election as they teamed with parents in canvassing for candidates, learning real time civic lessons.

Employing a multiplicity of technological methods for communication, Tea Party members, our modern day Minutemen, have provided a highly mobile, rapidly deployed force that has allowed activists to respond immediately, whenever and wherever.

The voices of the people were harnessed in numerous midterm elections around the country as we changed the guard to conservative candidates who vowed to lead our ship of state back into safe waters.

Now in post election days, we are hearing more rhetoric and more promises of change from once sneering politicians, who considered us the “enemies” but offered that we “…can come for the ride, but…gotta sit in back.”

Let us hope they understand the real message underlying these midterm elections…that we refuse to be governed by big government or political parties.  Rather, we intend to be governed by ourselves.

As we begin our long march forward, we must not forget the words of William Cullen Bryant, "Nor yet, O Freedom! Close thy lids in slumber for thine enemy never sleeps."

Signaling that we will no longer sit passively while Rome burns, on November 2, 2010 at the ballot box we the people “fired the shot heard round the world.”

With this first victory behind us, we will continue our fight to regain our independence from an encroaching, bloated government and power hungry, self-serving bureaucrats in this Second American Revolution!

This war is just beginning. We must harness the power of the voices of the people.
